Several years ago, Naked asked Angels to vote on which winemaker's fantasy wine they most wanted to taste themselves... and winemaker Coby Ladwig's Gamay got the go-ahead! It took a long time to come to fruition (pardon the pun), because Coby was determined to get the perfect grapes for his dream wine. Finally, it's here and it's superb. If you're not familiar with Gamay, Coby likens it to a Pinot. "It's a good wine for people who aren't really red drinkers, or who like a fresher style of red wine," he explains. "It's got freshness and zip."
"It's a lighter bodied wine," explains Coby. "It's got really nice, smooth tannins but also has great up front fruit flavours, and there's a little bit of a floral characteristic, which I really like. It has just enough tannin in the background to balance it out," he adds. For a lighter wine, it has a "heap of flavour", according to Coby.
Coby tasted a bunch of Gamays currently available in market (all in the name of research, of course) and was disappointed not to find many that really stood out. They also wore a hefty price tag. It inspired him to craft a great wine at a value-backed price (and at $22.99, he's done just that). Coby says it's a great wine for sumer. "I'd give it a little bit of a chill," he says. "It's not made to be really cold but around 15 degrees would suit it well."
