Coby Ladwig's Story
Coby Ladwig didn’t grow up dreaming of wine; in fact, he flat-out hated the taste of it. His original plan was a life in zoology, studying animals rather than grapes. However, after finishing his degree, a blunt piece of advice from an old babysitter changed everything: “Don’t do it. There’s no work in zoology.”
Needing a quick pivot, Coby noticed a new winemaking degree starting up. Since his mother had always worked in vineyards, he had grown up playing among the vines in Denmark, Western Australia. Despite his initial dislike for wine, he decided to give it a go - and he never looked back.
From Burgundy to the Barossa
Coby’s talent was evident early on. While studying at Curtin University, he trained at West Cape Howe Wines, who offered him a role immediately. To refine his craft, he headed to Burgundy, France. The adjustment to ancient techniques and a slower pace was a shock, but the lessons stuck. He became a specialist in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, soaking up knowledge that he later brought back to WA.
Over the next sixteen years, his skills helped wineries like Singlefile and Rockcliffe earn coveted 5-Star ratings. In 2017, his innovative approach earned him a spot on the prestigious Young Gun of Wine Top 50 list.
The "Coby Touch"
Coby’s winemaking philosophy is refreshingly simple: "I want to make wines people want to drink." He reads every Angel review and focuses on what the community actually enjoys - approachable, fresh bottles that don't need a decade in a cellar to taste great.
He isn't afraid to experiment, either. Whether it’s his Gamay - a light, zippy red perfect for summer - or his celebrated Chenin Blanc, Coby is always pushing boundaries. His Rosenthal Chardonnay remains an Angel favorite and was one of the most-ordered wines following the 2026 Tasting Tour.
A Wild Life in Denmark
Today, Coby is a liberated Naked winemaker. Thanks to Angel support, he has the freedom to handcraft small-volume, boutique wines and even owns his own 20-acre vineyard in Denmark, WA.
Away from the cellar, his love for animals remains. His property, which overlooks the ocean, is home to horses, sheep, goats, and a family of stick insects for his daughter. He’s traded the jungle for the vineyard, but life is still plenty wild.
"Naked Wines has been a godsend," Coby says. "It’s a way of getting wines we are very proud of onto the tables of people that will appreciate them."
