About the wine
"An absolute stunner" - Janine, Angel
- This is a stunning Chardonnay, lovingly hand-crafted from grapes carefully selected from three different vineyards. Each is 500m from La Petite Mort's cellar door, including their own block of 30-year-old Chardonnay fruit. They also sourced grapes from the Bungawarra vineyard, one of the most established vineyards in the region, with vines dating back 100 years.
- It is a classic, well rounded wine with the perfect balance of fruit and oak flavours. "It has strong stone-fruit characters," Glen shares. "It has a great lick of new, very fine French oak." That is balanced beautifully with the acidity
- Once you've cracked the top, you'll fall head-over-heels with its heady aromas of melon, peaches and toasted nuts.
Best before
This Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, but if you have the patience, it will certainly reward some time in the cellar. The intensity of fruit and aroma, combined with its fresh natural acidity and subtle oak structure, gives the wine a solid foundation for ageing. Over time, we would expect the fresh pear and nectarine characters to soften and develop into more complex, savoury and nutty flavours, while the creamy texture becomes even more integrated.
Our advice? Drink a bottle now to enjoy its youthful freshness, then hide a couple away and forget about them for a few years. The hard part will be having the patience!
Serving advice
Don't serve this Chardonnay too cold! A little bit of warmth in the glass allows the subtle fruit, creamy texture and gentle spice from the oak to really open up.
We recommend taking it out of the fridge for 10–15 minutes before serving. As it warms slightly in the glass, you'll notice the pear and nectarine aromas becoming more expressive and the wine revealing more of its texture and complexity.
In other words, don't freeze the flavour out of it! Give it a little time to breathe and warm up, and you'll get much more from the wine.
Food match
Living in the Granite Belt, one of our favourite pairings would be roast chicken with locally grown mushrooms, especially when the mushrooms are simply sautéed with butter, garlic and fresh herbs.
The creamy texture of the Chardonnay works beautifully with the chicken, while the fresh acidity keeps the dish lifted. The pear and nectarine fruit complement the richness, and the subtle spicy French oak has just enough savoury character to tie everything together.
It’s the sort of food we love up here — simple, local and full of flavour. And, of course, with a generous glass of Chardonnay alongside it!

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Glen Robert
- Expect the unexpected from Glen Robert at La Petite Mort. A former medical research chemist, Glen fell under wine’s spell around 2000 – and never looked back.
- In 2014, he discovered Shiraz and Viognier vines in need of some TLC in Ballandean, on Queensland’s Granite Belt. Today, the 40-hectare Bent Road property is home to vines, winery, wilderness and granite boulders, stretching along the pristine Severn River at more than 750 metres above sea level.
- It’s a surprisingly cool, continental corner of Queensland – one of the coolest growing regions in Australia – and that climate gives Glen’s wines their distinctive elegance, savoury spice and depth of flavour.
- La Petite Mort is Glen’s label – avant-garde, experimental and made for curious drinkers, these are wines that happily throw the rulebook out the window. Think extended skin contact, ancestral techniques and plenty of Glen’s scientific curiosity – resulting in seriously intriguing wines for those who like their next bottle to be a little bit different.
