Hamish Maguire - Naked Winemaker
No problem you can easily unsubscribe from our welcome emails.
As you make your way towards being a Naked Wines Angel we send a few email updates to explain why being an Angel is good for you and good for Aussie winemakers.
If you are all clued-up on being an Angel and would like to opt-out of the welcome emails you can, we just need you to confirm you’re happy with the $50/month pre-payment you will make towards future wine orders once you get your wings.
If you would like to give up your place on the Angel waiting list, we have people behind you who would love to take your spot.
Here are some of the welcome emails we would have sent you as an Angel in waiting:
Subject: Your journey begins here
Hi,
Thanks for joining the Angel waiting list!
Your place on the list is confirmed and you're on your way to joining an exclusive group who are helping to change the Australian wine industry for the better.
There are currently (we put your position here!) people in front of you, but as we release more spots you will move closer to getting your wings and all the incredible benefits that come with it.
Here's a short welcome from Sam Plunkett, one our favourite winemakers...
The wine industry is broken, and you're helping to fix it
Right now, the two most important people in the wine business are getting screwed; you and the winemaker.
You probably didn't know it but you've been paying too much for wine. Way too much. And at the same time, winemakers have been getting a bum deal.
So who's been making all the money?
Australia has a unique problem - the wine industry is controlled by a massive duopoly. The two big supermarkets have 77% of the market. Can they really be trusted with all that power?
To read more about the problem, and how Angels are helping to revolutionise the wine industry click here.
We'll keep you posted
Over the next few weeks, as you move up the list, we'll send you updates on your position. So keep an eye out for those. You might want to add chat@nakedwines.com.au to your contacts.
You can always see your place in the line by checking your Naked Me page, or by downloading the FREE Naked Wines mobile app for iOS and Android.
Want to spread the word?
At Naked Wines we don't spend money on mainstream advertising, instead relying on our customers to share the love with their friends and family.
Head to this page to send your friends a $50 wine voucher and get a $10 credit for each one that places an order.
Cheers,
Luke Jecks, Naked Chief

Subject: You've been paying too much for wine
Hi ,
You are now number (we put your position here!) on the list and getting closer to joining our 71,007 Naked Wines Angels helping to revolutionise the Australian wine industry.
This might come as a shock to you...
...but right now the two most important people in the wine business, you and the winemaker, are getting the worst deal.
Here's the problem:
The wine business in Australia is controlled by a massive duopoly.
An incredible 77% of all wine sold in Australia, is sold by Coles and Woolworths through retailers like Dan Murphys, BWS, Liquorland, Cellarmasters and more.
Can we trust them with that much power?
Their huge buying power allows them to squeeze suppliers to get the lowest prices; bad for the winemaker and bad for independent wine merchants who can't compete on price. It's also not sustainable, suppliers risk going bust.
Increasingly the duopoly is also making their own label wines to maximise profit. This is bad for you because choice and value is impacted, and it's bad for winemakers because it means they are now competing with their own customer - the duopoly!
Angels are unscrewing the wine industry
The only way to fight a goliath is to come together as one.
Aussies have already made a stand by signing up to be an Angel with Naked Wines.
And you're on your way to joining the cause
When you get your wings, you will deposit $${paymentAmount} a month into your Naked Wines piggy bank.
If you do the maths, that's currently over $1,000,000 a month coming into Angel funds. Which means we can back talented independent winemakers with confidence.
Good for you, good for the winemaker
By funding winemakers upfront we can remove a huge chunk of cost in the bottle of wine that you pay for, but can't taste. Meaning you get a great price.
And winemakers can secure the best fruit, use the best oak and give the wine the love and care it needs to taste delicious. Meaning you get a great tasting wine.
All safe in the knowledge that a band of Angels are ready and waiting to buy it. Meaning the winemaker makes a good living.
We'll have loads of fun along the way
Another problem with the wine industry is that it takes itself way too seriously. We believe that all you need is a glass and some good friends to enjoy our wines - no pretension required.
Now... let's poke some fun at Coles and Woolies shall we:
Cheers,
Luke Jecks, Naked Chief
p.s. I reckon you deserve better than supermarket wine labelled as something else and I reckon you'll be blown away by the talent of a winemaker who is given the freedom to care!
Subject: You've moved up the list, plus a good news story.
Hi,
You keep moving on up the waiting list
You are now number (we put your position here!) on the list and (we put the number of people behind you here!) people are now patiently waiting behind you.
When you get your wings, you'll join other Angels helping us to support winemakers like Adrian and Rebecca Santolin...
Adrian and Rebecca had a dream
"For over 10 years we dreamt of one day making our own wine. Fast forward to the present and we're finally living that dream with thanks to Naked Wines Angels"
They desperately wanted to make their own wines, and saved for nine years to make just 100 cases in 2012.
The reality is that without Angel support, Australia might have missed out on their incredible talent.
Angels made their dreams a reality
Now, thanks to Angel funding, they will make over 40,000 cases this year and are one of our most followed and loved winemakers.
Adrian and Rebecca make superb wines that punch well above their weight. And they're exclusive to Angels.
Meet them and ask them anything
As well as making stunning wines, Adrian and Rebecca are wonderful people who love chatting with our customers about their wines.
Watch their video and meet them here.
Cheers,
Luke Jecks, Naked Chief
Subject: I've got a new boss. It's you.
Hi,
My passion in life is making great wine
One of the best things about being a Naked Wines winemaker is that I get direct feedback from the people that drink my wines... you!
Which kind of makes you my new boss - and like any good boss, you'll tell me if I'm doing a good job, or if I need to step up my game.
It's easy to tell me if I'm doing a good job
Naked have built a really groovy website and mobile app to help you talk to me:
- Your Naked Me page or the mobile app will ask you if you like the wines you buy
- Answer with a simple thumbs up or thumbs down on each wine
- That can be the end of it if you like, but if you want to help me out even more you can write a more detailed review.
I read every single comment on my wines
Don't be shy, I can take any kind of feedback. And simple plain English is perfect, no need to wine talk here.
Let me know if you liked it, if you ate it with something awesome, or if it just wasn't for you.
The best bit is that I can reply to you so we can have a good old chin-wag about my wines.
Although I'll warn you, I could go for hours!
Cheers,
Sam Plunkett, Naked Winemaker
p.s. in case you missed it, here's the video we made with Luke from Naked about why you're waiting to be an Angel.
Subject: No winemakers were harmed in the making of these wines
Hi,
You keep moving on up the waiting list
You're now only (we put your position here!) places away from never paying full price again, ever!
When you get your wings, you'll join our
Angel prices on everything!
If you ever shopped for wine before (I'm guessing you have) you would be used to something like this:
Ever wondered when or if the wine was ever actually $17.99? Yeah me too... And if it really was meant to be sold at $17.99 how the heck is it now $11.99?
At Naked Wines we have two prices also, the difference is the prices are fixed and actually paid by real people.
Our list price is for non-Angels and while very competitive for the quality (check it out if you like) our discounted price is always discounted and it is the price that Angels pay all the time.
We didn't screw anyone to get these prices
In fact you could say that Angels have "unscrewed" winemakers. By funding winemakers upfront we're able to remove a huge chunk of costs that in a traditional wine business would be passed on to you.
It also means the winemaker can spend more time in the vineyard and less in the office. Which means the wines taste better. It's a win, win.
It's only possible because we have the confidence to fund winemakers based on the size of Angel piggy-banks. It really is the power of the people at play getting a better deal for everyone.
A world of sock blowing wines and privileged prices is only (we put your position here!) places away.
Cheers,
Luke Jecks, Naked Chief
Subject: Who drank all the wine!??
Hi,
Movin' on up
You're now only (we put your position here!) places away from your Angel wings, at which point each and every wine on the site will be available to you.
(psst... did you notice that (we put the number of people behind you here!) people are waiting behind you now!)
Wouldn't it be great if the wine never ran out?
A tap that just poured out your favourite wine...
It would solve a few issues at my house! Like when I go to grab the bottle I hid in the rack for later, only to find my wife smiling and busy rating it on her phone.
That's the problem with a great wine... it's finite.
It can't just be reproduced over and over again. But it's also what's great about wine; the diversity of well made wine is fascinating.
With wine being finite, if it's also delicious then it quickly becomes an endangered species.
We do our best to ensure that Angels don't miss out on the wines that were made for them and because of them.
We keep the tap flowing using 'Angel exclusive'
Right now Angel exclusive wines are greyed out for you (sad face), but once you have your wings the whole world of Angel wines are opened to you (smiley face!)
That said, they still sell out fast so don't let something interesting wait... grab it while it's there.
The basic rules for what becomes exclusive are:
- Just released: All wines are exclusive for the first 2 weeks
- Angel favourites: If it's the new vintage of something we know that Angels previously climbed over each other to get
- Small batch: Tends to be top shelf wines, but if only a small quantity was made then we lock it away
And then there is this wine; it's my personal favourite and I buy our wine guy Poll a lamington every monday to keep it Angel exclusive!
When you find your favourite, let me know.
Cheers,
Luke Jecks, Naked Chief
Subject: Open this email or the piggy gets it...
Hi,
You're almost there!
Only (we put your position here!) people in front of you now. And (we put the number of people behind you here!) waiting patiently behind you!
In a few days you'll be getting your wings, and you'll make your first $${paymentAmount} deposit into your Naked Wines piggy bank.
We'll email you again to let you know when
The $${paymentAmount} monthly deposit is the key to unlocking all the great Angel benefits you're about to get.
Plus it helps you spread the cost of buying your next case.
Remember, the money in your piggy bank is yours to save or spend however you like
With
Save it for Christmas, or order every month - just remember it isn't a membership fee!
How it works
When your Angel status is confirmed we'll use your default payment method ( (your card goes here)) to deposit $${paymentAmount} into your piggy bank. Then every month after that we'll do the same.
You can control which day we take your deposit once you get your wings.
You and the winemaker are both better off
Your $${paymentAmount} works to get you a better wine and a better price.
And it works for the winemaker because they are able to make outstanding wines for less, and therefore get to make a good living by providing you with great value.
Opt out now if you're not convinced
If you want to opt out of being an Angel that's fine. There are (we put the number of people behind you here!) people behind you in the line who are gagging for your spot.
We think you'd be mad to do that when you're so close to the incredible rewards of being an Angel.
Plus you'd have to join the back of the line if you change your mind...
But you can leave the waiting list here.
Cheers,
Luke Jecks, Naked Chief
p.s. don't forget, you're in control. If you need to pause or change your monthly payments at any time, just ask.
