After the fires

Recently, bushfires tore through the communities of Victorian winemakers Nina Stocker (Two Pairs) and Sam Plunkett (Butterfly Effect, The Victorian). Today, these resilient areas are rebuilding. Across Strathbogie, Highlands, Whiteheads Creek, Ruffy and surrounding areas, the bushfires were devastating. Farms were razed to the ground. Livestock were lost. Homes and livelihoods were changed forever.

And then – almost immediately – the rebuilding began.

It’s what Aussies do.

“When the flames died down, an army of people turned up – and many are still here,” says Sam. “Cheerful, capable people with utes, slip-on fire units, fencing tools, excavators, tractors and trucks. This is happening on farms right across the state.”

The work hasn’t stopped. Moving stock. Clearing debris. Rebuilding fences. Delivering feed. Fixing machinery. Doing the hardest jobs imaginable – without fuss, without thanks, without expectation.

And independent winemaking has never meant standing alone. It’s built on neighbours, growers, workers, volunteers – people. These are their people.
