Industry stalwart keen to rescue a very precious vineyard
- Anthony’s amazing career is dotted with other Aussie winemaking legends he's learnt from, mentored or worked alongside. Central to Anthony’s Naked story is his lifelong love affair with the Shiraz grape and his collaboration with longtime friend, colleague and gifted viticulturist Kym Ludvigsen.
- Both men had always nurtured a desire to do their own thing, seperate to the mass wine companies. Kym’s vast experience led him to discover the very finest Victorian vineyard site: north facing, high altitude, pristine cool-climate, brilliant fertile deep-red soil. He bought it, and planted it in 1995 with a proven, old, local Shiraz clone. “Kym believed his vineyard was as close to heaven as you could get - he loved it.”
- Before Naked, Anthony had amassed literally hundreds of wine awards including the World’s Best Shiraz for his 2005 Heathcote Shiraz at the Decanter International Wine & Spirit Competition. Then disaster struck. Kym died in a tragic farm accident in 2013. Today, Anthony continues to help Kym’s family by purchasing the premium Shiraz fruit and creating outstanding wine that pays homage to all the traits his dear friend showed - big, generous and full of life.
Anthony Murphy's Story
Meet Anthony.
Anthony Murphy is the 42nd winemaker to join the Naked family! Anthony believes “All great wines need a great story.” And, his story - this story - is great indeed. A life of friendship, collaboration, loyalty, trust, passion, and heartbreak.
Over an illustrious career spanning more than 40 years, Anthony has learnt, worked and mentored alongside some of the true greats of the Australian wine industry. While Chief at the iconic Mildara winery he was instrumental in creating the 1983 Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning best red: the most prestigious and sought after wine award in Australia.
Along the journey, and with many famous labels, he has amassed literally hundreds of wine awards including the World’s Best Shiraz for his 2005 Heathcote Shiraz at the Decanter International Wine & Spirit Competition. Seriously… WOW! Central to Anthony’s Naked story is his lifelong love affair with the Shiraz grape and his collaboration with longtime friend, colleague and gifted viticulturist Kym Ludvigsen.
Both men had worked for the big powerful wine companies, but both had always nurtured a desire to do their own thing - Anthony to make great Victorian Shiraz, and Kym being a perfectionist, to grow the very finest Shiraz grapes in his beloved Great Western wine region in central Victoria. Kym’s vast experience led him to discover the very finest Victorian vineyard site: north facing, high altitude, pristine cool-climate, brilliant fertile deep-red soil. He bought it, and planted it in 1995 with a proven, old, local Shiraz clone - the very best possible! It grew into a mature, renowned and revered Shiraz vineyard. THE BEST! “Kym believed his vineyard was as close to heaven as you could get - he loved it.”
It was a brothers-in-arms collaboration - Anthony bought Kym’s premium grapes and made great Shiraz and Kym got the cash to maintain his prized Shiraz block. Then disaster struck. Kym died in a tragic farm accident in 2013. Today, Anthony continues to help Kym’s family by purchasing the premium Shiraz fruit and creating outstanding wine that pays homage to all the traits his dear friend showed - big, generous and full of life. As Anthony says “All great wines need a great story; a narrative worthy of the balance of flavour and body which makes an unforgettable wine stand out.”
